Alberta plans to change fixed election date, citing disaster risks in spring

May 9, 2024
Alberta plans to move its fixed election date from May to October, one year after wildfires forced the evacuation of nearly 30,000 people as parties jostled on the campaign trail. The province’s Public Safety Minister said the change is needed because of the number of springtime natural disasters over the years, including the Slave Lake fire in 2011, the Calgary flood of 2013, the Fort McMurray fire of 2016 and the drought that parts of the province are currently facing.
